Reconstruction of large-scale peculiar velocity fields

چکیده
A reconstruction method for recovering the initial conditions of the Universe starting from the present galaxy distribution is presented which guarantees uniqueness of solutions. We show how our method can be used to obtain the peculiar velocities of a large number of galaxies, hence trace galaxies orbits back in time and obtain the entire past dynamical history of the Universe above scales where multi-streaming has not occurred. When tested against a 128 ΛCDM simulation in a box of 200h Mpc length, we obtain 60% exact reconstruction on scales above 6 hMpc. We apply our method to a real galaxy redshift catalogue, the updated NBG (Nearby Galaxies), containing 1483 galaxies, groups and clusters in a radius of 30 Mpc/h, and reconstruct the peculiar velocity fields in the local neighbourhood. Our reconstructed distances are wellmatched to the observed values outside the collapsed regions if Ωm(t) = 0.20 exp(−0.26(t−13)) where t is the age of the Universe in Gyrs.

Testing the Gravitational Instability Hypothesis?
We challenge a widely accepted assumption of observational cosmology: that successful reconstruction of observed galaxy density fields from measured galaxy velocity fields (or vice versa), using the methods of gravitational instability theory, implies that the observed large-scale structures and large-scale flows were produced by the action of gravity. This assumption is false, in that there ex...

We show that in a hierarchical clustering model the low-order statistics of the density and the peculiar velocity fields can all be modelled semianalytically for a given cosmology and an initial density perturbation power spectrum P (k). We present such models for the two-point correlation function ξ(r), the amplitude Q of the three-point correlation function, the mean pairwise peculiar velocit...

متن کاملOptimal Moments for Velocity Fields Analysis
We describe a new method of overcoming problems inherent in peculiar velocity surveys by using data compression as a filter with which to separate large–scale, linear flows from small– scale noise that biases the results systematically. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method using realistic catalogs of galaxy velocities drawn from N–body simulations. Our tests show that a likelihood ana...
متن کاملWiener Reconstruction of Large-scale Structure from Peculiar Velocities
We present an alternative, Bayesian method for large-scale reconstruction from observed peculiar velocity data. The method stresses a rigorous treatment of the random errors and it allows extrapolation into poorly sampled regions in real space or in k-space. A likelihood analysis is used to determine the fluctuation power spectrum, followed by a Wiener Filter (WF) analysis to obtain the minimum...
